Two figures stand back to back on the shoulder of the vessel, their arms interlaced in a gesture of union and mutual support. Doubled figures in West African ceramics commonly evoke twinship, ancestral duality and the link between the visible and spiritual worlds. The beak-like mouths and spiked crests suggest a hybrid being, part human and part bird or spirit, a recognised way of expressing supernatural authority.
The pellet-studded arms recall scarification, a marker of identity and initiation, while the rosette bands on the body suggest protection and cosmological order. The side spout points to a vessel for liquids, perhaps libation or offering. Its specific ritual use is not documented.
The vessel contrasts a smooth, spherical body with an exuberantly textured figural crown. Dense applied pellets create a lively play of light and shadow, and the interlaced arms form a pierced, openwork centre that gives the upper register an architectural rhythm. The matte, earthy surface has a warm sandy tone with darker accents in the recesses. Vertical rosette bands divide the sphere into clear segments, balancing the busy summit with a calm base, and the flared pedestal foot gives the whole form stability and presence.
