Symbolism & Iconography

Coated in pale kaolin clay (mbi or mpemba), the white patina directly symbolizes the realm of ancestors, purity, and the afterlife. Used in secret society rituals—such as the judicial Ngil or ancestral Bwiti rites—the mask served as a vessel for ancestral authority to expose evil, resolve community disputes, and protect the village from harmful spiritual forces.

Aesthetic & Formal Analysis

A classic expression of the Gabonese heart-shaped facial motif (visage en cœur). The composition is defined by the stark contrast between the pale, concave face and the dark, sweeping arch of the continuous brow and nose line. Notable details include the vertically-striated eyelids, the seamless tapering down to a pointed chin, and a textured coiffure at the crown featuring cross-hatched triangular side projections flanking a central crest.
