Symbolism & Iconography

In the ceremonial traditions of the Akan and Mandé peoples, the bush cow or bull represents raw wild power, physical endurance, and spirit protection. Masks representing horned bovid beasts are danced during sacred masquerades (such as the Gye or Goli performance cycles) to bridge the wild realm of the bush with the social structure of the village, bringing blessing, fertility, and spiritual purification during major community rituals.

Characterized by its striking organic symmetry. The sweeping, heavily ridged horns arch inward to form a closed oval framing above the head, contrasting with the smooth, elongated face below. The large, concentric carved eye rings create a serene yet commanding, watchful expression, while the dark, weathered patina emphasizes the deeply etched textures along the horns and muzzle.
