Symbolism & Iconography

The face, half painted with kaolin (mpemba), presents the figure as a vessel that draws its power from the land of the dead. The hand raised to the head is a gesture of alertness. It differs from the hands-on-hips stance of the classic mangaaka but belongs to the wider nkondi repertoire of a figure ready to detect and answer wrongdoing. The dense field of nails records the petitions, oaths and disputes brought through the nganga.

The woven rattan basket at the shoulder and back and the attached red hide or fabric bundles are rare on published mangaaka. They are most likely additional bilongo packets or protective wrappings added during the figure’s active life. The Mayombe and Chiloango River region, which straddles the borders of the DRC, the Republic of the Congo and Cabinda, is known for the largest and most ambitious nkondi.

Aesthetic & Formal Analysis

The figure’s main strength is its scale and commanding vertical presence. The confident naturalism of the head — strong brow, watchful gaze and bared teeth — is set against the raw density of the nailed torso and the woven and hide elements at the shoulder. Its size places it among the more imposing works of the nkisi nkondi tradition.
