Symbolism & Iconography

The figure takes the classic pose of the nkondi as hunter: the right arm is raised, its fist gripping a shaft for a spear or blade, while the left arm is bent at the hip in the stance of a chief or judge. The domed cap with central knop and incised band recalls the mpu. The pale eyes with dark pupils signal sight into the spirit world, and the open mouth, showing the teeth, shows the spirit ready to act.

Nails, blades and iron plates cover the shoulders, back and torso. Each records an oath, a dispute or a plea, and their density reflects a long working life. The rounded abdominal form marks the seat of the bilongo.

Aesthetic & Formal Analysis

A monumental, frontal composition. The smooth, deeply patinated body, the finely modelled face and the strongly carved legs contrast with the bristling iron armour. The corroded reds and oranges of the metal against the dark, satin grey-brown wood create a dramatic range of tone, and the raised arm and shaft cut a strong diagonal across the vertical structure. The incised brows and toes show the sculptor’s control. The figure stands on bare legs on an integral plinth.
