Symbolism & Iconography

Every nail records an act: an oath sealed, a dispute settled, a curse called down or a request made. The dense mass of iron is therefore a record of the figure’s working life. The thick earthen material among the nails holds further medicinal charges, and the pale rounded elements, possibly shell or stone, add ritual substance.

The eyes, set with glass or a reflective inlay, let the spirit see wrongdoers. The peaked cap refers to the headdress of leaders and ritual specialists, and the carved feet present the figure as a standing guardian.

Aesthetic & Formal Analysis

A composed, smooth, oval face with fine lids and a quiet expression rises above a halo of iron, the nails bursting outwards in every direction from a rough earthen matrix. The lower face has a warm reddish-brown patina and the peaked cap a layered, aged surface. The heavy square plinth and the carved feet with incised toes give a firm, frontal stance.
