Symbolism & Iconography

The raised right arm ends in a hollow, ring-shaped hand that once held a weapon: the enforcing gesture of the nkondi. Medicines were placed on the head, belly and back, or in any opening, and sealed with resin. Over time, bundles of wood and cloth-covered medicine packets were added.

The knots and ties refer to the binding of the spirit, and the cloth to offerings made to it. Blades and hooks were added each time the figure’s powers were called upon.

Aesthetic & Formal Analysis

The smooth, dark, rounded head with pale inlaid eyes contrasts with the thick, crusted mass that covers the torso, a surface built up by long accumulation. The raised arm gives the figure a strong vertical line, and the round base grounds it.
