The Bakongo (Kongo) peoples occupy the western Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Congo and northern Angola, the historical heartland of the Kongo Kingdom. Coastal sub-groups such as the Yombe and Vili are especially renowned for the nkisi nkondi power figure — a commanding human form activated by a ritual specialist and charged, nail by nail, with oaths, judgements and pleas.
