Mangbetu

Queens of Clay: Mangbetu figurative vessels from the courts of the Uele. Built by hand, fired in open bonfires and crowned with the elongated head and flaring coiffure of the Mangbetu noblewoman, these jars and ewers from north-eastern Congo were commissioned by chiefs and kings, offered as diplomatic gifts and later made for travellers.
