Grebo or Kru — this style is instantly recognizable by its flat plane construction and multiple cylindrical, tube-like projecting eyes, a defining hallmark of Grebo/Kru masking traditions

Époque / PériodeMid-20th century

Mid-20th century, based on the worn pigment, smoothed carving edges, and surface aging consistent with genuine handling rather than recent tourist production

Symbolique et iconographie

Grebo masks of this type were historically used in warrior/men's society contexts and displayed at community events to project intimidation, vigilance, and spiritual power. The exaggerated, multiplied eye motif is central to their purpose — meant to convey heightened, almost supernatural, watchfulness and readiness for conflict or protection of the community.

Multiple cylindrical projecting "eyes" (here appearing as four round discs) — the signature Grebo motif; multiplying the eyes beyond the natural two amplifies the sense of vigilance, alertness, and supernatural perception

Domed, rounded upper element (forehead or attached secondary form) — adds height and visual weight to the composition, a common feature in Grebo mask construction

Bold black, white, and red-brown painted geometry — this striking, high-contrast palette is characteristic of Grebo masks and was intended to create strong visual impact during performance, often under firelight or in motion

Flat, planar face with a raised central vertical nose ridge — Grebo masks favor abstraction and flatness over naturalistic modeling, distinguishing them sharply from the rounded, serene portrait masks of the Baule tradition

Narrow, elongated oval overall shape — reinforces the abstract, non-human character of the mask, emphasizing spiritual force over individual likeness

Analyse esthétique et formelle

This mask represents a dramatic stylistic departure from the naturalistic Baule portrait masks elsewhere in your collection. Grebo masking art embraces flatness, bold color-blocking, and radical abstraction of facial features — especially the eyes — to create a startling, almost cubist visual language that profoundly influenced early 20th-century European modernist artists (Picasso famously owned and was influenced by a Grebo mask).
