Likely mid-to-late 20th century. The highly exaggerated, avant-garde proportions indicate a prestige sculpture carved for display or the mid-century art market rather than an early ceremonial dance mask.

Symbolique et iconographie

In Chokwe visual language, large ancestral masks project spiritual authority and strength. The heavy, downcast eyes capture a state of deep meditation and wisdom. The diagonal scarification marks etched into the upper cheeks denote community identity and social harmony, while the immense, stylized chin extension signifies masculine power and ancestral oversight.

Analyse esthétique et formelle

The artifact relies on extreme, contrasting volumes that echo the Central African designs admired by early 20th-century Cubists. It features a deeply concave, heart-shaped face anchored by a sweeping brow and a long, slender nose. The smooth, exaggeratedly bulbous cheeks sit in sharp contrast to the rigid, rhythmic triangular notches carved along the edges of the elongated chin handle.
