Symbolique et iconographie

The inset glass eyes give the figure the power to see into nsi a bafwa, the land of the dead beneath the surface of the water, and to find hidden wrongdoers. The open mouth with bared teeth gives voice to the spirit, speaking the oaths and judgements put to the figure and warning those who break them. Lines of small iron studs trace the brow, temples and cheeks like scarification, marking the face as a seat of ritual authority, and the brass studs along the crown, an imported metal, signal prestige.

The mass of iron nails is the heart of the nkondi idea: each records an oath, a settlement or a call for protection or retribution. The fibre ring at the neck recalls kanga, and the white and red of the surface refer to mpemba and tukula, placing the figure between the two realms it was made to mediate.

Analyse esthétique et formelle

A strong vertical sequence: domed head, swelling body, bristling corona of iron, slender support and square plinth. The calm, rounded volume of the head contrasts with the dense, radiating nails. The glass eyes catch the light, the brass studs add a warm lustre, and the pale mineral accretions over a darker ground, crossed by red lines on the blue-grey body, give the surface an encrusted depth.

Note. Attributed to the Kongo rather than the Songye on the evidence of the inset glass eyes, the open mouth and the heavy nail cladding. Songye figures usually have cubic, sharp-planed faces set with brass tacks and strips.
