Symbolique et iconographie

The two heads suggest doubled vision and constant watchfulness, an idea known from two-headed dog figures, in which the second head sees between the world of the living and the land of the dead. The glass eyes link the figure to the ancestral world. Both heads wear close-fitting caps recalling the mpu; one has a zigzag border, a sign of rank. The parted lips show carved teeth, giving an active, speaking presence.

The dense mass of earth, cord, cloth, fibre and a curved, horn-like element at the necks and chest holds the bilongo, and each bundle and tie records an invocation, an oath or a request.

Analyse esthétique et formelle

The overlapping heads create a compact, doubled silhouette. The faces are dark, smooth and burnished, with crisp brow ridges, sharply defined noses and a fixed, unblinking gaze. Their controlled carving contrasts with the raw, accumulated texture of the neck and chest. The figure stands on carved feet with articulated toes on a stepped base, giving it a stable and monumental stance.
