The fibre and rope binding of the torso, combined with a cluster of nails at the neck and chest, is the construction associated with the type known as nkisi nduda. Each nail marks an invocation or a petition sealed by the nganga. The inset eyes allow the figure to see into the spirit world and detect wrongdoers.
The small metal loop at the side of the head was probably a fixing point for a suspended element — a cord, a small packet or feathers — now lost. The forward-leaning head and the arms drawn in to the body give a watchful, contained bearing, which suggests a figure of protection, divination or guardianship rather than one of active pursuit.
The head is carved with strong, confident naturalism: a smooth, bald cranium, a sharply defined, finely incised brow ridge, pale inset eyes with dark pupils and a composed mouth. This calm treatment contrasts with the textured mass of rope, fibre and nails at the chest. The stance is compact and grounded, with large articulated feet, and the warm, even patina of the head, shoulders and legs shows long handling.
