As a vase, this object has great purity and simplicity of line. As a personality it is funny, amusing, with a wide--toothed smile and loosely articulated arms that pay little attention to the dictates of useful anatomy. The tension between these two elements----the serious form and the comic content----gives the vase a unique presence. There is also a mystery about it. Caked in mud inside are beads and other objects as yet undisturbed.
