Heads of this type are generally understood as idealised royal portraits, probably of an Ooni (sacred ruler) or an ancestral figure, rather than individual likenesses. The fine vertical striations covering the face are variously interpreted as scarification, ritual facial marking or a sign of sacral status, while the lips are left smooth. The row of small perforations along the hairline, jaw and beard line probably held a crown, veil, hair or beard attachments in organic material. The ringed neck signifies beauty, prosperity and dignified bearing. The hollow, open crown is consistent with mounting on a support for display or ceremonial use, possibly in funerary or commemorative rites.
The face is calm and composed, with almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and full, smooth lips set against the finely ribbed surface. This contrast gives the head a rich, tactile quality. The warm brown and reddish tones of the surface add depth. The ringed neck lifts the head vertically and gives it a monumental, upright presence. The ear is carefully modelled and the profile has a strong, quiet line.
