The figure stands in the classic pose of the nkisi nkondi: one arm is raised, the hand forming a ring, in a gesture of challenge and vigilance, while the other hand rests on the hip in the commanding stance of a chief or judge. The open mouth gives voice to the spirit within, speaking for those who seek its power. The fitted cap recalls the mpu worn by Kongo leaders and ritual specialists.
The nails, blades and fibre bundles across the body each record an oath sealed, a dispute settled or a plea for protection or healing. At the centre, a cavity in the torso held the bilongo, the empowering substances that joined the carving to its unseen power.
The work turns on the contrast between the calm, dignified face, with its heavy-lidded eyes, strong brow and parted lips, and the dense surface of the body, built up in layers of textile, fibre and iron. The frontal, confrontational pose, the rich, dark patina and the finely carved hands and feet give the figure a strong and tactile presence.
