Baule

The Baule of central Côte d’Ivoire are celebrated for a sculptural language of calm: figures with serene faces, elaborate coiffures and scarification rendered in fine relief, and a surface finish of exceptional care. Many figures are “spirit spouses” (blolo bla / blolo bian), partners from the other world kept in a private shrine.
